Day 1: Our subject has just arrived. We have told her that she is participating in a twelve week experiment to cure cancer. She was brought to a plain white room and injected with a sleeping agent... While she was unconscious we brought her thirteen floors underground. The room we brought her to was identical to the one where she was sedated so she was unaware that she has even moved....
Day 2: She is starting to ask questions about how this drug works, we tell her what we have been told to tell her, that it is an agent that fights cancer cells....
Day 3: She is starting to have bad dreams at night, she is having trouble sleeping....

Day 7: The lack of sleep has started to take an effect on her. Her skin is tight, and drawn, she is irritated.... Her hair is beginning to fall out and her ears are growing longer. We tell her that this is a side-effect of the drugs. For all we know, it is....

Day 14: Hair has begun to grow on the subject's cheeks. Her eyes are darkening and widening.... Her fingers have doubled in length, her hair on her arms and legs is growing in thicker. She can not sleep and she believes she is dreaming, the effects of her body transforming are having an interesting effect on her mind....

Day 30: The subject's ears have doubled in length and are growing fur. She has started to sleep, but only during the day. Her fingers now resemble the bone structures of a bat's wings, but only about half as long as we believe they will get. Her tail bone has grown a little over a foot and is quite lethal. It is becoming more and more difficult to administer the drug to the subject. Her hearing has become such that even on the other side of the lead-lined door she can hear us. She refuses to go on with the study.... We have taken to only discussing the subject outside the building. But we have our orders, we must follow through. If we could hone some of the effects of this drug without the subject's transformation, it could be revolutionary....

Day 65: The subject has lasted longer than the three previous subjects. The drugs seem to have less side effects. Membrane has grown in the subject's fingers, creating wings. She quite resembles a large bat.... The experiment is less than three weeks from completion. She still has not yet been able to fly, but we believe she has the ability to. She refuses to eat anything other than fruits. We bring her meat but she never touches it. This shows that the fruit bat whose blood we are using has had the effect of such as well. On the plus side, almost all the cancer cells have been destroyed....

Day 80: With just four days left in the study we are afraid we will have to terminate. The subject has developed a taste taste for blood. One of my associates went in to feed her and cut himself while cutting her fruit and the smell of blood drove her crazy. She attacked him. He survived, but barely. We had to sedate her....

Day 81: She's escaped! She managed to attack her feeder and killed him, we thought we had sedated her but it had no effect on her. Alarms are sounding and it sounds like she's getting closer. If my journal survives, there's a chance someone will see and know not to try this experiment again. It's-

Well, this is my submission for the Splice contest. I drew a human being spliced with a bat and thought I'd write a short story about it as well. Just a quick little thing to explain how she became bat-like. I wanted it to be an experiment and end badly to reflect the plot of Splice.
Day 1: Our subject has just arrived. We have told her that she is participating in a twelve week experiment to cure cancer. She was brought to a plain white room and injected with a sleeping agent...
